This afternoon (6:30 p.m.) the draw for the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey takes place, in which FC Barcelona will meet its next rival in the KO competition after beating Barbastro yesterday in a poor match.
The draw has had to be postponed a few hours due to the suspension of the match between Unionistas and Villarreal yesterday, due to a blackout on the Salamanca field just before the start of extra time. The last tie of this round will resume today, at 4:30 p.m., after extra time, with the 1-1 score with which it was suspended. Once it is known who advances to the round, the RFEF will proceed to draw for the round of 16.
The 14 classified First Division teams may be paired against any rival as there are no restrictions for them in this round. Thus, Xavi Hernández's team could face any of the teams that have qualified, including Girona or a classic against Real Madrid.
Tenerife is, until now, the only Second Division team classified after giving the shock in the Canarian derby against Las Palmas in a heart-stopping match, with two sent off (one per team), which García Pimienta's team won by two goals to zero. The Tenerife team will meet this afternoon the rival who will visit the Heliodoro Rodríguez López next week.
Unionistas de Salamanca, for their part, would also be paired with a First Division team if they overcome the tie against Villarreal this afternoon. If the Castellón team qualifies, however, there will be no restrictions and they will be able to face any rival, which is why the draw cannot be held until the classified team is known.
The matches will be a single match at the home of the lower category rival. In the event that two teams of the same category have been paired, the team whose ball is drawn first will act as home team. The round of 16 will be played this month, on January 16, 17 and 18. The grand final will be on April 6 at La Cartuja in Seville.
