Aemet calls for prudence: DANA can bring up to 90 liters per square meter in 4 hours

A drastic change in weather conditions is expected to shake the peninsula and the Balearic Islands this weekend, according to alerts issued by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

José Luis Camacho, Aemet's spokesman, has announced in an interview in More than one that an Atlantic trough has become an Isolated High Level Depression (DANA), concentrated mainly in the west of the peninsula. This has led to the expectation of persistent and widespread rainfall, which has been accompanied by intense storms.

The most severe nucleus of the DANA has been identified for Saturday and Sunday, although Camacho has stressed that the meteorological models have been constantly updated. In a country that has already been in the midst of a massive summer holiday return operation, with 6,820,000 long-distance journeys forecast for the weekend, such conditions have posed challenging road scenarios.

It is especially notable that the effects of this DANA will be felt in almost the entire national territory, with the exception of the Canary Islands. Areas of the Mediterranean could receive up to 50 liters of rain per square meter in an hour, and hail storms have also been anticipated. Although it has been difficult to determine the most affected areas, the impact has been predicted to be significant and alerts have been activated in 17 provinces.

As for temperatures, the system has also had a notable impact. Camacho has pointed out that summer has ended abruptly in most of the peninsula. While temperatures have risen slightly on the Mediterranean façade, the weather, in general, has been colder than usual for the time.

The Aemet forecast for Saturday, September 2, indicates that the rains will be less likely in the northeast of the Balearic Islands and in the southwest of Galicia during the morning. However, as the day progresses, the rains will become more intense and persistent.

In Mediterranean regions, the accumulated could reach 80-90 liters per square meter in a period of 3 to 4 hours. In terms of temperature, the expected maximums will be cooler and below what is usual for the time of year.

On Sunday, the trend will continue. The rains will continue to be intense and persistent, with special concentration in the southeast of the peninsula and in the central area of the country.
