A fairytale castle in the Penedès

If it weren't for the fact that it is in a dilapidated state, Bellvei Castle, in Baix Penedès, could have come out of a fairy tale.

It emerges in the middle of the forest with its elegant towers, especially the cylindrical ones. It is accessed by the Camino de los Carreteros, recovered by the residents of Bellvei and which was the route followed by farmers to go to the fields around the castle.

The excursion to this ancient fortress is for everyone. It appears documented in the 11th century (1037), although this place was inhabited long before, as evidenced by the remains of Iberian ceramics that were found.

The castle was completely transformed in the 19th century and converted into a large manor house, Mas de la Muga, which was later abandoned.

Leaving the town center of Bellvei, we will discover a landscape dotted with dry stone shacks and a large hundred-year-old tree, which we can see in this photographic report in Las Fotos de los Lectores de La Vanguardia. The castle, declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest, stands on a hill at an altitude of 154 metres.
