The gender gap between entrepreneurs is reducing in the city of Barcelona. The number of this group of residents in the city in 2022 was 40,875 self-employed, mostly men (58%), but women entrepreneurs (42%) have increased two percentage points, according to the municipal report L'Emprenedoria a Barcelona 2022. While While the weight of female entrepreneurs has grown in 2022, recovering the level of 2019, men experience a significant decrease (-7.6%), after reaching maximum levels in 2021.
Regarding the Entrepreneurial Activity Rate (TEA) - which measures entrepreneurial initiatives of less than three and a half years of life in the market - it fell slightly in 2022, but remains “relatively stabilized” in recent years with a 3 .9% and is two tenths below the level of 2021 and 2019.
By nationality, entrepreneurs in Barcelona in 2022 continued to be mostly Spanish: 22,850 people, representing 55.9% of the total. However, their participation in the total has trended downward, while that of foreigners has evolved upward and now represents 44.1% of the total, the report states. The entrepreneurial activity rate of the foreign population (6%) is double that of people of Spanish nationality (3%).
Regarding age, the number of entrepreneurial people between 18 and 39 years old (21,100 people) has stabilized in the city in relation to 2021 and represents 51.6% of the total, with a slight predominance over those between 40 and 64 years old. By type of activity, there is a high percentage of entrepreneurial people residing in the city who carry out their activity in the tertiary sector (89.2%). This percentage has been increasing over recent years and is more than eight percentage points higher than that of Catalonia as a whole, where both industry and construction have a greater relative weight.
Likewise, the study, carried out by the Municipal Data Office of the City Council, indicates that the number of entrepreneurs in the city of Barcelona represents close to two thirds of the total of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (65%) and more than a quarter of Catalonia. (26%).
Eixample continued to concentrate the largest number of entrepreneurial people in 2022 (16.8%), followed by Sant Martí (13.6%) and Sarrià-Sant Gervasi (10.5%). The most positive evolution has been that of Gràcia, with an increase in the number of entrepreneurial people of 8.3% compared to 2021, followed by Ciutat Vella (3.9%) and Les Corts (1.3%). However, Sarrià-Sant Gervasi was again the district with the greatest propensity for entrepreneurship, with a rate of 4.9%, followed by Gràcia, Les Corts and Ciutat Vella, where the rates also exceeded 4%.
