Vitor Roque and the 'cuffing season'

There have always been words for everything in our language. But in the mid-nineties of the last century we decided to turn to English to steal words and expressions as if Spanish were a disabled language. It was necessary to add a patina of sophistication to the obvious so that anything said seemed more chic and modern than it is in our language.

Here's an example: cuffing season. And what the hell is cuffing season? Well, look for someone who resembles a couple and sign them up to have a relationship that lasts as long as the winter lasts. Come on, something like grasping at straws with the aim of having company and body warmth at your disposal during the time of year when the days are short, the nights are long and you are not very comfortable being away from home because of from the cold. As you know, with frost, flirting in the open field becomes more complicated and tiring. I really want more blankets and television. Days of investing in monogamy, even if it is with an expiration date in sight. Make sure – they and they – shoot during the closed season in the hunting reserves, betting on placing someone permanently on the sofa to massage our feet, scratch our backs and remind us what time the next flu shot is due. All this while waiting for the good weather to return and the awakening of spring. Experts, there are also some in cuffing season, have determined that this mating of convenience reaches its zenith during Christmas and the days immediately following it.

This year Barça has launched the practice of cuffing season. It was necessary to feed the warmth of emotions to survive the football winter that began in the Blaugrana club weeks before the weather. Vitor Roque is the one chosen to make the bad weather more bearable and fake a sudden infatuation that will change our lives immediately.

We should not be very harsh or pessimistic with couples born out of necessity rather than uncontrollable instinct. Sometimes it even turns out that someone who thought they were investing in a product with limited profitability ends up making a splash by finding the love of their life. But the experts, the same ones as before, advise setting the bar for expectations within the realm of what is reasonable. And the cuffing season is not designed to live an uncontrolled passion from the beginning, but to fulfill with emotional professionalism the task of avoiding loneliness and despondency when we most need to have a kind and loving distraction on hand. That at the outset would be more than enough to guarantee that we do not feel frustrated at the first opportunity. The devil always lives in expectations. Also when we talk about cuffing season or Vitor Roque, whichever way you look at it, it comes to the same thing.
