Summer heat in March: temperatures will exceed 30 degrees this weekend

The first week of March arrives with rain in a large part of the northern half of the peninsula and with a gradual rise in temperatures that will reach almost summer values during the weekend, since it will be possible to overcome the 30ºC barrier for the first time in this 2023, as forecast by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).

"This week we will definitely leave the cold behind," said the AEMET spokesman, Rubén del Campo, who points out that he explains that the fronts associated with Atlantic storms that are circulating a little further north than the latitude of the Peninsula and will leave rain in the next few days, especially in the western half of the peninsula.

These storms will also drive the west and southwest winds, which are temperate, so the temperatures will rise clearly so the frosts will disappear and the snow level will be very high.

On the weekend there will also be a new thermal rise and it is possible that temperatures reach very high values for the time of year more typical of May or even June in some areas. Thus, Del Campo sees "possible" that the weekend can reach and even exceed 30ºC locally in points of the peninsular Mediterranean area.

On Tuesday, the Atlantic storms will leave possible rains and showers more likely in Galicia and Andalusia, but it is not ruled out that they will occur in other parts of the western half and in mountain areas, although they will not reach the Mediterranean regions or the Balearic Islands. The snow level, in general, will be above about 1,400 to 1,600 meters. Temperatures will continue to rise and there will only be frost in the Pyrenees, while in the central hours of the day they can reach 18 or 20ºC in the Ebro valley and in the Mediterranean regions, as well as in a large part of Andalusia and the Balearic Islands.

For Wednesday, the spokesman warns of the arrival of a new front associated with a storm that will enter Galicia, where they will have a rainy day, especially in the west and where rainfall will be persistent and abundant. In a weaker way it will also rain in the Cantabrian communities, the Pyrenees, Castilla y León, Extremadura, Andalusia and precipitation is not ruled out in other areas of the western half and the central area.

Del Campo predicts that on Wednesday it will not rain in the Mediterranean or the Balearic Islands either, but warns of the wind, which will blow "very strongly" in large areas, but especially on the Galician and Cantabrian coast. "The winds will come from the southwest and will be temperate, which will trigger the snow level above 2,000 meters. On Wednesday it will go from 18 to 20ºC in the Cantabrian Sea, the Ebro Valley, Mediterranean regions, the Balearic Islands and a good part of the southern half and even in Valencia or Murcia, where They will exceed 25ºC on Wednesday.

The spokesman anticipates that Thursday will be a "similar" day, with abundant rains in western Galicia, and with rainfall also in the Cantabrian Sea, the Pyrenees, the western half and the central area. That day the wind will blow again strongly, especially in the coastal areas and temperatures will rise one more day, particularly at night, which will not drop below 5 degrees Celsius in most of the provincial capitals.

"They will be far from frost," Del Campo points out, adding that there will also be a mild day at noon, with temperatures similar to those of Wednesday: from 18 to 20ºC in the far north, the Mediterranean area, and in much of the southern half. .

As of Friday, high pressures will continue to prevail and the atmosphere will stabilize and, therefore, the rains will gradually disappear from the territory. It will only continue to rain that day in the west of Galicia, points in the extreme north and in a very isolated and occasional way in all of the mountains.

In general, slightly cloudy skies will predominate and temperatures will rise again driven by winds from the west and southwest that will carry very warm air that will heat up even more due to the high pressures and the orography.

In this way, in the central hours of the day they will go from 18 to 20ºC in "practically"; 25ºC in Mediterranean regions such as Catalonia or the Balearic Islands, where even locally some locations will not be far from 30ºC. In fact, the spokesperson predicts that on Saturday and Sunday the 30ºC barrier will be overcome, for example in Valencia, Murcia or Malaga.

These temperatures in general will be located on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at values between 5 and 10ºC above the average for this time of year in a good part of the country. "Maximums will be more typical of May in general and even daytime temperatures of the month of June," he comments.

For the Canary Islands, the spokesperson expects stable weather all week, with little cloudy skies and some intervals of high clouds and light winds. The minimum in the archipelago will be around 18ºC and the maximum around 23 or 24ºC although the weekend sees it likely that they will also touch 30ºC.
