The silliness of political correctness

Everything that is not now within the politically correct is labeled as reactionary. José Luis Martín reminded us of this in a chat with subscribers of this house and, although in his case he was referring to humor, his reflections are useful for many other professional areas.

The cartoonist and cartoonist, author of the cartoon Apunts del Natural in La Vanguardia, says that he was much freer in the eighties than today. And he is more right than a saint. "If it's just a drawing!", Martín usually laments, while recognizing that what causes this situation is the activation of a self-censorship that should not be activated. It's all nonsense.

There is a return to intolerance. And the most surprising thing, adds this artist, is that this new, let's say, "inquisition" comes from a part of the left that has identified, in its breeding ground of political incorrectness, several taboo subjects: feminism , immigration, climate and a long et cetera.

I brought José Luis Martín to this article because of an interview with the Minister of Education of the Generalitat de Catalunya that this newspaper also published last Sunday. Not that Anna Simó has anything to do with graphic humor. However, what Simó suggested does fit in with the self-censorship that Martín was talking about.

Asked about the reason for the poor results in basic skills of Catalan students and which have been dragging on since 2016, the minister pointed to the "cultural and social complexity" of Catalonia, which she linked to the live enrollment, which allows school students to be accepted from other territories or countries that join with the course already started.

Anna Simó understood everything. But it was pointing out immigration, even with euphemisms, to immediately fear that his words would place it outside of political correctness. In view are the verbal pirouettes he came to do and the subsequent nuances. Anyway, bravo! For the first time, a person in charge of Education who says things by her name. The reality in the classroom is what it is. You need to diagnose it, act, put resources and attention into it, and this is the antithesis of what is reactionary, even for the left.
