After being left out of the Congress of Deputies in the general elections and far from obtaining representation, the PDECat decided to open a process of reflection that will culminate after the summer with the celebration of an extraordinary congress. At that moment, the future of the party will be decided, if the activity is maintained, if there is a refoundation or if the curtain is lowered definitively.
The only thing that is clear for now is that the formation of David Bonvehí, who no longer has electoral rights - he only has them for the European elections - will not be presented in the event of a repeat of the elections in the coming months.
The heir party of Convergència Democràtica de Catalunya (CDC) has remained as an extra-parliamentary force both in Parliament and in the Lower House and has just over 180 councilors obtained in the municipal elections of May 28 with the Ara Pacte Local coalition.
It remains to be seen what will be decided, but in the post-convergent formation they understand that the PDECat brand is exhausted, just like that of Espai CiU - not the intention to bring together several actors that were behind this name -, used in the last election date. For this reason, the sources consulted believe that maintaining the space necessarily requires a refoundation that also leaves aside other projects that have been launched in recent years, such as Centrem or Marta Pascal's Nationalist Party of Catalonia.
There are several options on the table, but there is no urgency or rush. On the one hand, a structure can be maintained to support the municipal and supra-municipal groups that have formed after the municipal ones and endure. We could also study the formula of presenting together with other forces, as Unites per Avançar does with the PSC, or take refuge in the local area and later try to make the leap back to the other institutions.
But all this requires a critical mass and people involved, warn training sources. The idea of uniting the various brands that emerged when CDC folded its sails and make a centrist and moderate nationalist political offer remains, but it remains to be seen how it all turns out.
A third option would be to close and hold the minimum structure in the administrative plan to face the cause of the 3% in the National Court, in which they are prosecuted as successors of CDC.
When it comes to self-criticism, PDECat believes that Roger Montañola's campaign was very good and they think that he was a good candidate and an asset that should not be lost, although they admit that perhaps they missed having a a bit of national spirit and be a more territorial candidacy, not just representative of Barcelona. "Perhaps we have moved forward in time and it was not yet the time to make the speech we made", points out one of the sources consulted.
In the economic field, the formation has been cautious in the last two campaigns and has tried not to incur debt, so it does not have any urgency in this regard.
Former president Artur Mas, who remains a member of the party, has expressed his desire that sooner or later the formation ends up being integrated with Junts. However, the bridges between Bonvehí and Jordi Turull, personal relationships aside, are not going through the best of times, especially after the municipal elections. Together they swept candidates, mayors and councilors in the PDECat, although in Barcelona both brands went together with Xavier Trias as candidate.
