The mysterious case of Reyes Maroto

Between agonizing polls that fill the last week of the campaign with football emotion and sophisticated analyzes of what is to come, two images were trending on social networks yesterday: the rant about the dirt in Madrid's Plaza Mayor after the massive central meeting of More Madrid on Saturday, and the queues to see José María Aznar in Murcia announcing the Apocalypse. The photos of the dirt in Plaça Mayor were not the result of the rally of Mónica García and Rita Maestre, but of the visit of Glasgow Celtic to play a Champions League match, but the fact that they were viralized by right-wing and ultra-right accounts indicates that the powerful act of More Madrid caused restlessness and shyness to his rivals.

It is taken as a true fact that the attendance at the meetings speaks more about the organic health of the parties and their organizational muscle than about the vote expectations they have, but since the breakdown of bipartisanship it has been happening that the new formations do not have the organic racks of its predecessors, so its summoning power does speak of the atmosphere. And even in the old matches there are singularities in which it is necessary to appreciate the aromas of the moment. Thus, Aznar's success in Murcia not only certifies the status of favorite of the PP in the region but also indicates that his militancy supports the ex-president's tremendous speech, aligned with the Trumpism of Isabel Díaz Ayuso, and abjures Alberto Núñez Feijóo's non-nato moderationism.

In the case of the strangest political subject of this campaign, Vice President Yolanda Díaz – who travels the country supporting lists of Unides Podemos and formations likely to join her project of generals–, her rallies always they are frequented, and this has triggered a sable between the little ones, since the leaders of Podemos who visit the same squares are stuck in strategies that prevent comparison. Especially after, at the beginning of the campaign, Podemos' central event in the Madrid neighborhood of Orcasitas brought together just a few dozen people while, at the same time, IU gathered a thousand in Mieres around Díaz.

But the real mystery of this campaign are the images of desolation that circulate through messaging and social networks at the events of the PSOE candidate for mayor of Madrid, ex-minister Reyes Maroto. Whether dancing with Brazilian dancers or holding a rally on top of a box in Moratalaz or Puente de Vallecas, there never seem to be more than twenty people around him.

This helplessness does not speak of his vote expectations – they are not spectacular, but neither dramatic – nor of the strength of the socialist municipal groups, but suggests that they have turned their backs on him. If that were the case, Covadonga Tomé, the candidate of Podemos for the presidency of the Principality of Asturias, is no longer the only one who this 28-M presents herself with acronyms that detest her and who do everything possible to make us notice it.
