Participation in the Basque elections stands at 28% at noon

Participation in the 2024 Basque elections stood at 28% at 1:00 p.m., according to the first balance sheet offered by the authorities. In Álava 25.9% voted, in Vizcaya 27.4%, in Gipuzkoa 30%.

By city, in Bilbao it has reached 25.7%, in San Sebastián 29.5% and in Vitoria 25.3%. "The day continues to develop completely normally," commented Josu Erkoreka, vice president and security advisor of the Basque government.

Comparisons of participation data with previous years are not offered because the hours do not coincide with those of the previous election. The data would be 14 points more than in the first data from the 2020 elections, in the middle of the pandemic, when figures recorded until 12:00 p.m. were offered. The next balance will be given at 5:00 p.m.

In these elections, the Basque Country chooses between the renewal promised by the PNV or the change of cycle with Bildu. This is one of the most uncertain election days in the Basque Country in recent years. They are the first elections in almost ten years with a total change of faces in the candidates for lehendakari since the main parties - PNV, EH Bildu, PSE/EE and PP - have renewed their candidates for that position.

Nearly 1.8 million Basques are called to vote to elect the 75 people who will make up Parliament in the thirteenth legislature of this autonomous community. In total there are 2,695 tables distributed in 729 electoral locations. As a colorful note, a total of 75,634 young people will vote for the first time after turning 18 since the 2020 elections.

The counting of the votes will begin at 8:00 p.m., when the voting centers close, and the first data will be offered at 9:00 p.m., after which the count can be followed online, and it is estimated that it will end at 10:30 p.m. .
