Esquerra and the PSOE reach an amnesty agreement

The alleged leaders of Democratic Tsunami continue to be investigated for indications of terrorism. The Government of Pere Aragonès and ERC saw a barrier to giving the go-ahead to this rule that excludes accused members from this platform. Despite this, Republicans and Socialists agreed yesterday at the last minute that they are part of the collective of possible amnesties. This realization led to both parties agreeing on a statement last night in which they assured that they had reached an agreement on the amnesty and that "they are moving forward decisively in the agreement for the XV legislature".

The PSOE was not prepared for the amnesty to embrace those accused of terrorism. For the socialists, the very seriousness of the crime was more than enough reason. ERC did not give in. A call between Pedro Sánchez and Pere Aragonès unleashed the grievance. The statement states that "the two formations consider their expectations fulfilled and their political principles satisfied" regarding the amnesty. Both presidents have delegated to their negotiating teams "the final closure" of the pact.

From Esquerra they note that the agreement only includes amnesty. The other two folders, which are self-determination and social welfare (Regions and putting an end to the fiscal deficit) remain open. PSOE sources insist, for their part, that the amnesty agreement is only with the Republicans and that there are still fringes with Junts.

Be that as it may, on Tuesday morning Patrícia Plaja, spokesperson for the Catalan Executive, had demanded that they not be left out. ERC, outside the four walls of the Palau de la Generalitat, had done the same on Monday. "We want a total amnesty", said Raquel Sans, spokesperson for the party.

"A possible amnesty law must resolve all cases of political reprisals", and this affects, as Plaja explained, those investigated by Tsunami. "And according to the information from the Government, they are not there; no one should be left behind", emphasized the Government spokeswoman.

The complaint has borne fruit. Some of the alleged leaders of Tsunami are from ERC's circle of influence. The fact is that all of them could have been included in the amnesty law a few days ago. In the case, only the Prosecutor's Office had been named as the prosecution, which was in favor of accusing those involved only for public disorder. This would have caused the terrorism investigation to decline and, therefore, to be transferred from the National Court (competent for terrorism cases) to the ordinary Catalan courts.

But the judge Manuel García-Castellón admitted on October 25 the impersonation as an accusation by Vox and Dignitat i Justícia, who claim the accusation for terrorism. This caused the case to remain in the Court for this crime.

ERC and the Government have put a spoonful in an amnesty law that has mainly been worked on by the PSOE and Junts so that the law also includes Tsunami. However, the pact could also benefit the members of the Committees for the Defense of the Republic (CDR), arrested in September 2019 as part of the Judes operation. They are also accused of terrorism.
