The majority of young Catalans believe that there are women who file false complaints to harm their partner

59% of Catalan young men (men) between 16 and 24 years old believe that some women file false reports to obtain financial benefits and harm their partner, in the area of gender violence. This is one of the conclusions of a study, published this Tuesday, carried out between December 2023 and January 2024 and which represents the first wave of a longitudinal survey of the citizen panel of Catalonia, prepared by the Center d'Estudis d'Opinió. The survey was carried out on people over 16 years of age residing in Catalonia with a random sample of 6,813 people and with a margin of error of /-1.2%.

The percentage of young people between 25 and 34 years old who defend the same position is also not negligible: up to 43%. The figure is decreasing – although very slightly – as age increases. The percentage is 42% among those between 35 and 49 years old; by 40% between those between 50 and 64; and by 39% from 64 onwards.

Their position on this issue is also striking. Up to 31% support this statement in the age group between 16 and 24 years old. The percentage drops to 23% in women between 25 and 34 years old, although it rises to 33% among those between 35 and 49 years old, to 32% among those between 50 and 64 years old, and to 35% among women who exceed that age.

That criticism of sexist jokes is exaggerated is supported by 47% of men between 16 and 24 years old. That figure drops to 37% for those who are 64 years old or older. In women, the percentages are much lower. Here, however, the number is increasing as their age grows. 19% of those between 16 and 24 years old agree with this thought, by 23% (from 25 to 34 years old), 27% (from 35 to 49), 33% (from 50 to 64) and 39% ( from 64).

The uneven acceptance of diversity is also reflected in the survey when it asks the degree of discomfort that someone close to the respondent would show depending on who the partner of the latter's child was. In the event that the other person was gay, lesbian or bisexual, Latin American, black or Asian, she would be viewed favorably. Between 65% and 70% of those surveyed rate it above 5 on a scale from 0 to 10. It would be a different thing if it were Maghrebi, gypsy or transsexual, cases in which 50% or more rate it with a 5. or below.
