The European Commission (EC) is "aware" of the news that appeared in the press about the removal of LGTBI flags from official buildings in Nàquera (Valencia) after the government agreement in that municipality and stressed that peaceful demonstrations are "a fundamental right in all democratic countries".
"We are aware of the information in the media. We do not comment on announcements. Since this affects local administrations, we would first have to talk to the authorities of the Member States," the spokesman said at the Commission's daily press conference on Wednesday. "More generally," added the spokesperson, "the European Commission has clear standards on LGTBI equality, something that includes the European strategy and to protect girls and women from violence," he added.
"We have also been clear that peaceful demonstrations are a fundamental right in all democratic countries," the spokesman said.
On the other hand, Wigand stated that he was not aware of any contacts between the EC and the Spanish authorities to obtain clarification on this matter, although spokesperson Dana Spinant specified that they were going to "verify".
The government agreement in Nàquera (Valencia) between Vox, winner of the elections, and the PP includes measures such as the removal of LGTBI flags from official buildings and replacing the concentrations against sexist violence with acts "against all violence" or "against the violence".
This is clear from the agreement that Vox has shared on its social networks and that allowed the investiture of Iván Expósito as mayor of this town of 7,700 inhabitants last Saturday.
