Marta's mother, the girl in a coma due to an allergy: "The doctors let her suffer every day"

Marta, a 19-year-old girl from Cardona, has been in a coma due to an allergy for seven months. She drank a nut shake and went into anaphylactic shock that led to cardiac arrest. Her heart didn't beat for ten minutes and she fell into a coma.

Marta was born in Cardona, but now lived with her parents in the Valencian Community. That is why she was admitted to the Alcoi hospital.

Her mother, Maria Verdejo, has denounced in El mon a RAC1 how they treated her: "We see that our daughter's life was in danger and nobody paid attention to us. They let her suffer for hours every day, cringing in pain and with her face contorted The doctors told us that this was normal and typical of a vegetative state and that we did not want to assume it, that we did not bother them".

The reason for all this, according to Marta's mother, is that the doctor who was taking her "gave her up for lost" and that, from then on, for the entire hospital she was a hopeless case.

"They told us that she would die, that there was nothing to do and that we had to assume it. They sedated her more and more, until we fought with the doctors to remove the sedation," explains the mother. She also denounces that they even left her for a week without food.

Maria did not give up and, from the first moment, she was confident that her daughter could be saved. "I had to legally obtain guardianship of my daughter to have her medical history, because first they told me that they could not give it to me because she was already of legal age. From there, I looked for other clinics that wanted to treat her and I demanded neurological treatment and rehabilitator.

Three months later, Marta was admitted to a private center in Valencia, where her stay has been extended. She had to be there until April 19, but just this Thursday the family was notified of an extension of another two months. "The media knew about it for a week and they didn't announce it to us until yesterday. They should be ashamed."

Since she changed hospitals, Marta is improving: "Now she looks at us and starts babbling "mom" . María trusts that she will not have sequelae, but we have to wait to find out. Of course, she believes that her case is not unique: "Alcoy does not treat patients as she does. We fight for Marta and for all that she will have."

At the moment, Verdejo has not denounced the case: "For now, we prioritize fighting so that our daughter's life continues and so that she can continue in the hospital. Now they have given us two more months to wash our faces, but they should treat her until who needs it."
