Don't study a master's degree...

…unless you have a good reason. I'll explain myself. A master's degree in ESIC Business

In the pre-covid period, many people studied a master's degree almost by inertia. The juniors did so to continue their studies as soon as they finished their degree. And the more senior ones, because they have seen a co-worker get a master's degree as well. As a starting point it was fine. But are they good reasons? Not at all. A master's degree implies a great commitment, and we are going to explain why.

Completing the degree and wanting to continue training may be a catalyst that makes us decide to study a master's degree. Or perhaps seeing that colleague who has just finished his master's degree is what instigates us to start ours. And as a base it is fine. But we will never be able to get the most out of it with these reasons alone.

A master's degree in ESIC needs greater motivation. As the big question goes: Where do I come from, and where am I going? That is, what foundation do I have and where do I want to direct my future work? Being clear about this is as necessary as the air we breathe. Only in this way can we make a good choice that will help us achieve our personal goals.

Let's start with the origin: where do I come from? If you have just graduated, your studies will serve as a foundation. In a business school like ESIC we get many students from Marketing, Business Administration or Advertising, and also from courses with a similar orientation such as Communication or Journalism, Law, Commerce or International Studies. These degrees serve as the basis for what I will continue learning. But to what extent do they condition me? The answer is that they do not condition at all.

Your student or work background establishes your knowledge in relation to that specific experience, but it is not a stricture for choosing a master's degree. As a recent graduate, you can choose a discipline totally different from your own. As a professional, you can use the master's degree to reorient your personal brand and your future jobs. The master's degrees are designed so that you can use what you already know, but at the same time, they are built around constant practice that allows the rapid assimilation of new, more specific knowledge related to the chosen specialization.

And then there is the second question: where do I go? This is a key question. If you are starting out in the world of work, the master's degree at ESIC will help you focus on something specific and acquire knowledge in a few months that would take longer to experience within a company. This will put you at a clear advantage over those who do not have these notions, and, therefore, will help you find a job. On the other hand, if you have been in the professional world for years, and you are what we commonly call a senior professional, the master's degree allows you to reorient your professional career, either for a change of sector, or for a promotion. Here it will be especially important to choose a master's degree with transversal knowledge, or a more specialized master's degree, depending on your motivation or objectives.

What is clear is that the master's degree leaves a very strong imprint to leave its choice to chance. Look, I'm a publicist. As such, I titled this article with a catchy slogan.

“Why would the director of a master's school tell me not to study a master's degree?” Well, you see it was a trick to make you think. Our background defines how we do things, and why we do them. Remember, you have the last word. Find something that really motivates you and makes sense. Only then will you be able to take advantage of your master's degree in ESIC Business
