At least two critically injured by a falling tree in Port Aventura

Two people have been critically injured and another 12 have been injured to various degrees after a tree fell on the tracks of the Tomahawk attraction in Port Aventura. The strong wind that hits the Camp de Tarragona area has caused the accident, which occurred shortly before 2 p.m. this Sunday. The ages of the people affected by the accident are unknown at this time. The attraction is frequented by families with children, as it is one of the roller coasters suitable for children.

The two most seriously injured have been transferred to Hospital Joan XXIII in Tarragona and Hospital de Bellvitge. There are three less serious injuries, four minor injuries and five people who have been discharged at the same time of the accident, as reported by the SEM (Medical Emergency Services of Catalonia):

Tomahawk is a wooden roller coaster frequented by children. The minimum height to access is 1.05 meters. Park sources report that the tree has fallen on the tracks and the branches have hit the first of the cars, causing injuries. The same sources clarify that none of the carriages have derailed due to the accident. In fact, Port Aventura is still open this morning, although the area where the incident occurred has been closed.

The Park's management has been quick to indicate in a statement that what happened is an event "completely unrelated to the operation and maintenance of our attractions, which meet the highest safety standards and are subjected to rigorous daily reviews."

A wind has blown in the area all morning, but the gusts have not been extraordinarily strong for Camp de Tarragona, accustomed to much larger gales than have ever caused serious incidents in Port Aventura until now.
