AI reaches the medical sector: How will it help doctors and patients?

In recent months, artificial intelligence has expanded significantly in different fields of science and knowledge, and one of them has been medicine, where advances in this technology are beginning to be seen in the most advanced hospitals in the world and will surely set a guide to the rest.

One of the most innovative cases is from the American Mount Sinai medical complex, where a computer program uses AI to calculate scores on the health status of patients, in addition to having expanded into the work teams of doctors and other health professionals. .

“Artificial Intelligence can bring numerous benefits to the field of medicine. But some of these benefits go beyond the purely medical, for example, optimization when processing, understanding and using patient data to reduce waiting times between tests or between appointments,” explains Hugo Álvarez, Territory Manager Iberia, Italy and Latam at Perception Point.

Álvarez recalls that “this is a reality, something that can already be done” and that AI is very useful for “analyzing large amounts of medical data quickly and accurately” to “assist in medical diagnosis, help in planning of personalized treatments, improve operational efficiency in hospitals and clinics, and support medical research by identifying patterns and trends, automating processes and creating predictive models with patient data.”

The AI expert explains that this technology “is already having a significant impact on the work of doctors in areas such as the interpretation of medical images, the analysis of clinical data and assistance in decision making”, because “it allows the analysis of a huge amount of data” to “make more precise decisions and be more efficient.”

In this sense, Álvarez considers that "AI can be a revolution in medicine and a great tool that can optimize and modernize the sector", but we must not forget the fundamental thing: "It will always be a complement to the doctor's work, an aid which allows optimizing the work of doctors and improving the quality and care of patients, as well as the management of hospitals and clinics,” he recalls.

The AI specialist insists that this “allows the analysis of a huge and complex amount of data that gives doctors the ability to understand the environment around them in real time” to “access updated information, monitor data and processes and analyze information in real time.”

However, as with any great technological advance, detractors have also emerged, especially in the United States, where groups of doctors have denounced the professional displacement that AI may entail for them, fears that Álvarez considers “understandable,” although he points out that “the majority of Experts see AI as a tool that complements and enhances medical practice rather than replacing doctors entirely.”

Therefore, he highlights that “AI can be valuable in specific tasks, such as diagnosis, but doctors remain essential to provide personalized care, understand the patient's context, and make decisions based on ethical and human values.”

The most important thing for the expert is that “supervision and collaboration between doctors and AI systems are essential to guarantee safe and quality treatment for patients, not only in the future, but already in the present.”

Furthermore, remember that “automatic AI systems must be protected from possible cyberattacks, especially through email, which is the main entry point for cybercriminals, as has been seen in cases such as the Barcelona Clinic.”

The arrival of artificial intelligence in medicine opens another infinite field of knowledge for this technology, for which more and more training and professionals are requested who know how to manage it correctly and apply it with its incredible potential that can serve today to save lives. .
