A 54-year-old woman has been arrested in Palma for drugging an octogenarian with benzodiazepines to rob him. She gave him the drug in a cafe and then suggested that he go for a walk. Once outside the cafeteria, the detainee took the man to an ATM, where he, already completely stunned, she withdrew money from the checking account and handed it over to the thief.
The theft was detected after a relative of the victim who lives outside Mallorca called him to speak with him on the phone. The family member was very concerned when he verified the poor condition in which the man was, so he called a family acquaintance and asked him to come to the home to buy what was happening.
The acquaintance had been walking with the victim in the morning and at that moment he was in apparent good condition, so he went to the house to see if there was a problem. Once there, the witness indicated that he found the victim dizzy and dazed, taking time to open the door and that she even fell to the ground, breaking furniture as a result of the fall. The friend notified the relative, the emergency services and 091.
When the agents arrived at the house, the medical services were already acting to try to care for the victim. After an analysis, they found that the man was in poor condition due to severe benzodiazepine poisoning, which forced him to be transferred to a health center in order to fully recover.
Suspecting that the poisoning could have been caused by another person, the acquaintance told the National Police agents that the victim planned to go out for a walk with the woman. The National Police Robbery group took charge of the investigation and verified that, in the afternoon, the victim and the woman were in a cafeteria in the center of Palma.
After finishing the coffee, the woman suggested that he take a walk and after ten minutes the man began to feel bad, he lost stability and could not walk. That was the moment that he took advantage of the detainee to force her to withdraw money from the ATM. The man assured police that he remembered being at the cafe, but then nothing else until he was woken up at his home hours later by his family friend.
