What you are going through is an emotional downturn: tips to overcome it

Sooner or later, more frequently or exceptionally. It is inevitable: everyone has experienced an emotional downturn in their life. This can last only days or a few weeks, but it is generally something specific and brief, without having a considerable impact on the life of those who experience it. Emotional depression is defined as that mood in which sadness and negative emotions predominate.

During an emotional downturn, it is common for people to have problems falling asleep, feelings of emptiness and hopelessness, even personal crises in which one questions everything about their life. Appetite is also affected, as is the ability to concentrate. People in this state see their self-esteem diminished, they feel apathetic, it is difficult for them to set limits and be assertive, and they may have intrusive thoughts.

The characteristics of an emotional downturn make it similar to a case of depression, which is why it is important to know what the differences are between the two, since the severity is also different. The team of psychologists at the MC Integral Psychology Center identifies three fundamental traits.

The first has to do with duration, since an emotional downturn does not last too long. Specialists warn that, if this lasts more than approximately 15 days, we could already speak of a “depressive process”, to a greater or lesser degree. On the other hand, there is the alteration in routines due to discomfort and negative sensations. When this happens, it is a warning sign. “You run the risk of this low mood turning into depression.” And the same thing happens when basic needs are no longer met, for example, maintaining good hygiene.

Given that anyone can fall into an emotional depression at some point, it is advisable to know what techniques to apply in these situations. Psychologist Paola Graziano shares a series of indications to deal with this negative mood.
