What is the relationship between the color of cats and their behavior?

Cats are ideal company for people. Even those who are indifferent to these animals end up becoming attached to them and making them part of their family. However, there are many prejudices about the color of cats' fur and its relationship with behavior.

On several occasions you have heard that orange cats are the most affectionate and unruly, that white cats are calmer and that black cats are difficult to save from shelters due to the myth that has been spread for decades about their "bad luck."

There are several studies where respondents assigned personality traits to their cats based on color, although the results may be influenced by the attitudes shared by cats under acute stress due to particular circumstances. However, there is no research that proves that cats define their personality based on their color.

A study in the Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science used an Internet survey to test the relationship between coat color and aggressive behaviors in domestic cats. About 1,432 kitten owners completed the survey, and the results differed across responses. Most respondents voted from their own perception when the animal was under acute stress from visits to the vet or socialization with strangers, not from its coat color.

"Analyses of aggression due to handling, as well as aggression displayed during veterinary visits, showed little difference between coat colors in these environments," they stated.

It can be said that cat behavior is a combination of genetics and the environment where it is raised. While there are certain characteristics that animals of a certain coat color share, this is more due to genetics.

If a gene is related to another gene on the same chromosome, these two genes will be transmitted from generation to generation. This is why most white cats with blue eyes are deaf, because the gene responsible for the color develops on the same chromosome as the gene for eye color and ear development. This does not happen with brain development, since there is nothing that links them, which is why it can be said that this association is a myth.

The color of the coat of these cats has no relationship with their behavior, but it can indicate certain health problems that the same breed shares. However, it is ambiguous to judge a cat by its color, and assigning these labels can be detrimental to the animal.
