What is lacunar amnesia and what causes it?

Memory is one of the aspects of the brain that generates the most studies, in addition to having the interest of the general public. Discovering how the brain stores memories, the best ways to improve this capacity, and what are some of its most common related disorders are often captivating topics for many. And precisely about the latter there is a lot to talk about, pathologies. One of them is known as lacunar amnesia.

When memory fails, the types of amnesia and the reasons that cause them can be very diverse, since there are multiple classes of conditions that affect this quality of the brain. One of them is known as lacunar amnesia, which consists of the difficulty to remember a specific period of time in life. Although it is possible to remember the events that happened before or after, the events of that particular moment are forgotten. This is how a lagoon is formed, which gives its name to this type of amnesia.

The reasons that cause lacunar amnesia have to do mainly with two origins: organic and environmental. In the first case, this type of amnesia is caused by some type of cerebrovascular accident that has affected the cerebral cortex. Causing a series of injuries whose consequence will be forgetting the events immediately before and after the concussion.

Instead, environmental causes are related to traumatic experiences suffered by the person with lacunar amnesia. The brain uses this as a tool to minimize the negative effects on the emotional health of the individual, as a kind of self-defense method.

To identify whether or not a person suffers from lacunar amnesia, it is important that they present various features of this symptomatology. In addition, in case of any suspicion it will be necessary to see a medical professional to be able to discern if it is indeed this type of amnesia. Once verified, the best treatment for said patient will be determined.

Currently, treatments for lacunar amnesia are usually psychotherapy and occupational therapy. In the first case, what is tried is to offer a series of tools to the patient to be able to face the emotional consequences caused by this memory loss. While occupational therapy is responsible for minimizing the negative psychological impact caused in the patient by suffering from this amnesia. However, if the case is of considerable severity, the possibility of implementing a specific medication with the administration of psychoactive drugs will be studied.
