Leaky gut syndrome: what it is and how it is treated

Leaky gut syndrome consists of an alteration of the wall of the small intestine, which causes substances and microorganisms that pass through it to eventually access the bloodstream. The result is a clinical picture so ambiguous that it makes its diagnosis considerably difficult. People who manifest this pathology experience very varied symptoms, such as headaches, but also cases of diarrhea and abdominal bloating. And to these are added others such as joint pain or food intolerance. As well as a feeling of constant tiredness.

Due to the inaccuracy and variety of symptoms presented by this disease, it can be a challenge for professionals to find the appropriate diagnosis. Furthermore, it should be noted that this is a recently identified pathology, according to Dr. Domingo Carrera Morán, something that has happened in recent years.

The average surface area of the small intestine ranges between 400 and 600 square meters. And this entire extension is protected by a single protective layer, the enterocytes. Specialist doctor Domingo Carrera Morán explains that it is covered by a layer of bacteria, which would be the microbiota, and another layer of immunoglobulins, which act as a defense. In turn, the enterocytes that make up the protective layer of the intestine allow the transit of substances such as nutrients and minerals.

However, the problem comes when the junctions between the enterocytes are affected and other types of harmful components sneak in, such as bacteria or toxins; that will eventually enter the bloodstream.

The reasons why this protective barrier can be weakened are varied. The doctor points out stress as one of the most common, which causes inflammation of the intestinal mucosa. But there are also other causes, such as other types of pathologies of the intestinal wall, for example, ulcers or food intolerances.

The specialist affirms that the first step in treating leaky gut syndrome is to find its cause in order to deal with it. However, he points out that it is important to implement a series of habits in the patient's daily life, since one of the main objectives will be to strengthen the immune system.

To achieve this, Domingo Carrera Morán shares a series of recommendations. One of them has to do with practicing regular physical exercise, as well as making sure you consume enough water daily. Food will also be essential to achieve a strengthened immune system that does not weaken so easily. And another of the tips he provides has to do with rest, improving sleep hygiene is key.
