How to train cognitive flexibility

It is possible that you know people who have a greater capacity to adapt to any plan, activity or unforeseen event. Regardless of where it is and who it is with. And, also, you probably know people for whom it is almost impossible to change their plans or their busy schedules. The reason for both behaviors is found in the so-called cognitive flexibility.

Cognitive flexibility could be defined as the ability that human beings have to adapt to changes or unforeseen events, even if they modify their routines or their rigid beliefs. In other words, developing cognitive flexibility will allow us to be more tolerant of frustration and foster greater coping skills. Although it may seem like an arduous task, the good news is that cognitive flexibility can also be trained.

Having greater cognitive flexibility can be beneficial in overcoming problems and adversity. The neuropsychologist Marta Estévez affirms that cognitive flexibility is the "cognitive capacity that our brain has to adapt our behavior or thoughts to new and changing situations." And she goes further, proposing a series of exercises to be able to train her and be more flexible when it comes to solving a problem effectively.
