How to take care of an Egyptian cat, hairless pussycats

Egyptian cats, also called sphinx or spynx cats, are a most peculiar breed of kitten. Their curious appearance, characterized by the absence of hair and large, pointed ears, makes them add as many followers as skeptics.

Some people think that they are bad-tempered cats, in addition to their unfriendly-looking face. But the truth is that this feline breed is affectionate, friendly, energetic, curious and very intelligent.

They make excellent pets, as they love to spend time with their trusted humans receiving cuddles. However, it is true that its particular constitution requires certain specific care that is more meticulous than that of other more common breeds of cats.

One of the attitudes most inherent to cats is their personal grooming, which they provide by licking themselves to keep their fur in perfect condition. However, Sphynx cats need help to keep themselves groomed.

Since they lack hair, their skin secretes more oil to keep them protected, so they need to bathe more often. The frequency will depend on how dirty it gets due to your particular circumstances, but you usually need about a monthly bath.

To bathe him, you have to put the water at a lukewarm temperature so that he does not get cold or damage his skin if the water is very hot. Likewise, it is necessary to use a special gel for your delicate skin and massage it carefully. Subsequently, it is important to dry your skin very well, especially under the folds, to avoid irritation and infection.

He also lacks hair on his ears and does not have eyelashes, so both areas need cleaning by his keeper. As for the ears, you must use gauze to remove grease and dirt, or use specific products recommended by the veterinarian. To clean the eyes, small touches should be made with a gauze soaked in saline and use a gauze pad for each eye, otherwise we could spread an infection from one to the other.

Finally, it is important to keep your nails short but sharp. To do this, you can file or cut them periodically or buy a scratching post, which will also serve as entertainment.

The feeding of sphynx kittens should not be taken lightly, since it is not the same food as for other cats. Hairless cats have a faster metabolism and secrete more oil on their skin to stay warm, so they need more food. Likewise, this must be of quality, rich in fats and proteins. In this sense, there are many specific feeds for this breed.
