How to know if your cat is hot

Spain is immersed in a heat wave that is particularly seriously affecting certain parts of our geography. High temperatures are difficult for humans to bear, but they are even more unpleasant for dogs and cats. Both dogs and kittens are especially vulnerable to heat stroke, which causes significant kidney failure in them and can even cause the death of the animal.

While dogs can use panting to regulate their body temperature, cats have fewer defense mechanisms to deal with heat. It is true that their fur insulates them from both cold and heat, but they only have sweat glands on the pads of their paws, lips and chin, so these areas are the only ones that emit sweat with which the cat can refresh.

Although any cat is sensitive to heat, puppies, elderly cats, cats with long and dense fur, overweight or other diseases have a particularly hard time. Added to excessive heat are the consequences of dehydration. If your cat doesn't drink enough water, he may suffer from kidney or urinary tract problems. Taking all this into consideration, it is important that you know how to recognize when your cat is hot and do everything possible to cool him down to increase his well-being.
