From the physical to the digital world: how to act on social networks after the breakup

Social networks have become true connection nodes over time. If dating apps have made finding a partner easier than ever, our social profiles are a true reflection of the ties we establish in our personal, professional, and love lives. Messaging applications and video calls allow us to cope with a long-distance relationship, but they can also be a double-edged sword if what we want is to disconnect from the person we have loved so much.

Breaking up with someone in the digital age is not easy, since being aware of the messages and stories of our ex makes it difficult to overcome the duel or can make us back down once we have decided to leave that person. Social networks can project the comings and goings of a couple, although we do not always know how to act so that this trance is as efficient and healthy as possible.

The photos, the comments and the rest of the possible signs of love leave a record on the social profiles of the heyday of a relationship, but also of its ups and downs. The use that couples make of social networks can also generate dynamics of control, jealousy and mistrust that can end up blowing up the relationship, according to psychologist and sexologist Arola Poch.

Messaging applications can be very useful when it comes to disassociating ourselves from a person, despite the unpopularity of this method to end relationships. A WhatsApp gives much easier communication to the person making the decision that might not have been carried out face to face and gives the recipient the advantage of being able to process the explanations in privacy.

Leaving it by message avoids a multitude of uncomfortable situations that can arise on the physical plane. However, applications such as WhatsApp and social networks are a channel through which, if they remain open, false hopes of returning can emerge. That your ex-partner stalks you or can see hints where there are none will only add firewood to the fallen tree. That is why perhaps it is best to openly tell that person that you need a time off to grieve.

If the other receives the proposal with pleasure, it will be enough to stop answering or respond assertively to his proposal to be friends, while, in cases of strong emotional dependence, it is convenient to block the ex-partner or even the people in his immediate environment to prevent misfortunes. After all, it is a forceful action that can be reversed once you have moved on from the relationship.

Relationships as a couple leave a fingerprint that takes us back to happy moments. Although we must not forget the shared experiences that have contributed to their own personal learning, some people opt for the sanitazing technique. Sanitizing social profiles consists of removing all photos, posts, or any other trace that reminds us of the other person and that may tempt us to reconnect. This practice, in the same way as blocking him, can be communicated to the ex with respect and out of all rancor. It will be a good way to stay firm in our decision and it will make it easier for us to turn the page.
