Erotomania: when you think someone is in love with you... but not

Delusions are the firm belief in something false, despite the fact that the person who suffers from them perceives them with total clarity and without any type of possibility of accepting a different or contrary argument to them. However, there are many types of delusions, one of them being erotomaniac delusional disorder or erotomania, which causes patients to develop the unrealistic idea that they are the object of someone's desire in particular. Specifically, they tend to be “unattainable” people, due to a higher social status or power. Although specialists are not clear about the incidence of this disorder, it is considered low.

Erotomania is usually discovered due to cases of harassment, persecution and obsession that arise from these situations, warns psychologist Bárbara Bravo. Since people who have this condition firmly believe that the other person is in love. And all the rejections or discouraging words that these individuals dedicate to them, due to unrequited love, are interpreted as the complete opposite. That is, declarations of love and proofs of desire.

Contrary to what you may think, people with erotomania do not only become obsessed with one person. The subject of love, as the specialist calls it, can change and there is even the possibility of more than one coexisting at the same time. Furthermore, cases of this disorder usually have a series of similarities that make it possible to identify them.
