Are older people more prone to allergies?

Although there are some allergies that affect throughout the year, such as food intolerances or allergies to dust, others are seasonal. Especially in spring, allergies proliferate, worsening the quality of life of those who suffer from them. Itchy skin, runny nose, cough, eye irritation, tiredness due to the effect of antihistamines... the symptoms are truly annoying.

Although there are people who have allergies from a very young age, anyone can develop one or more new ones throughout their lives. This also includes, of course, the elderly. In the elderly we are more sensitive to these reactions for different reasons and special care must also be taken to alleviate the symptoms of allergies.

In the elderly we suffer from certain conditions that increase our possibility of developing an allergy, as well as aggravate its symptoms. For example, our skin and eyes are drier and more sensitive. That is why it is common to have skin allergies, especially suffering from irritations, or rashes.

In the eyes, dry or itchy eyes, allergic conjunctivitis and tearing are aggravated. As for other symptoms associated with allergies, such as coughing or nasal congestion, they can be complicated in people with respiratory problems.

To this we must add that the immune system of the elderly may be weakened, which complicates the body's fight against allergens. Consequently, the symptoms are aggravated and there is a greater lack of energy. They may feel more tired and listless as a result of allergies.

On the other hand, it is common for an older person to have to take several medications for their health. Often this can lead to an allergic reaction to a certain drug. Or it may happen that the allergy medication is incompatible with another treatment that is being followed at that time. Also, antihistamines usually have some sedative or decongestant effect and this can be dangerous in some older people with other underlying problems.

Consequently, it is important that an older person who suffers from allergies consult with their doctor about the compatibility of their different medications. It is also beneficial for them to get adequate rest and eat a balanced diet, in order to keep their immune system strong.

Finally, special care must be taken before the appearance of any symptom or indication that announces the possibility of a new allergy or intolerance unknown up to that moment. For example, reactions to a certain drug, a personal care product or a food.
