Shakira has released a new and impressive music video for her single Copa Vacía, in which Manuel Turizo collaborates. The symbolism-laden video features Shakira in the role of a mermaid, an image the artist has recently revealed has deep personal meaning for her.
Just before the presentation of her new video clip, Shakira addressed her fans through an Instagram Broadcast. In this format, she spoke of her painful break with Gerard Piqué and how the image of the mermaid has come to symbolize her journey of self-realization.
Shakira referred to the mermaid as an embodiment of her current self, someone who is struggling with life and is on the path of rediscovering herself after her breakup. Thus, mermaid represents a fantasy for Shakira, because she is on "the journey of becoming one with herself again."
In another voice message, Shakira explained that the mermaid "sacrifices a lot for love, ending up in the trash among rats. Fortunately, it is in its natural habitat." She then added with a dose of humor and sarcasm: "Any resemblance to reality is purely coincidental."
