'Welcome to Eden', the Spanish phenomenon of Netflix in 2022 deflates

The paper house and Elite made it possible to think that in Spain they had a gold mine to seduce the international public, with extraordinary viewing figures due to the cost of the productions, but these phenomena do not have the expected continuity at the industry level. Welcome to Eden, one of the strong bets of the season after becoming the most watched Spanish original series of 2022, is deflating with its second season.

The new episodes headed by Amaia Salamanca, Amaia Abestaruri and Belinda have seen 76 million hours in their first three weeks on the platform, compared to the 116.9 million hours it accumulated during the spring of last year. It represents a drop of almost 35% in the audience, casting doubt on the reception of the previous year. Having a serialized plot, with big questions to answer from one season to the next, one in three users has preferred not to continue with the story.

Bienvenidos a Eden has a youth target similar to Elite. It begins with the arrival of Zoa, a teenager, at a promotional party on a paradise island. She soon, however, realizes that something is wrong: she barely remembers anything that happened the night before when she wakes up and is informed that she will have to wait to take the ship back. She then realizes that Astrid, the person in charge of her, is actually the leader of a sect with hidden purposes and rules that can end her life.

Elite, in fact, is in better shape than Welcome to Eden: its sixth season, which experienced a sharp drop compared to the fifth, managed to add 107.5 million hours watched in its first three weeks in the catalogue. Unlike other veteran series, in addition, Elite is a production that can keep its costs in check: by progressively regenerating its cast every so often, the salary of its cast cannot scale.

The snow girl, therefore, remains the most successful Spanish fiction of what we have in 2023 on Netflix. In its first three weeks, it accumulated 101.6 million hours with the adaptation of the novel by Javier Castillo.
