Ortega's decision, made after a conversation with the priest and reflecting his deep marital doubts, occurred despite the fact that everything pointed to an uncomplicated wedding. According to El Confidencial, Carmen, aware of her partner's uncertainties, tried until the last moment to help him see things clearly, but in the end she could not influence her decision.
The cancellation of the wedding has not only left Carmen and her family dealing with the emotional and social repercussions of the groom on the run, but also raises legal questions. According to information from SEMANA magazine, the young cardiologist could consider taking legal action against Ortega for damages, which could take the case to court.
Although it is not usual, Spanish law contemplates the possibility of lawsuits in these cases, especially if one considers the expenses already assumed by the 500 guests, including transfers to Jerez de la Frontera, accommodation and other preparations.
The most affected, leaving aside the jilted bride, are her parents. Those who were going to be the matador's in-laws, understandably, have not taken kindly to Ortega backing out at the last moment. They even acted as spokespersons. So, in view of the events, they have decided not to bear any expenses and transfer everything to the bullfighter.
Ortega, for his part, has already assumed financial responsibility for the approximately 90 thousand euros that the wedding organization cost. A lawyer cited by SEMANA explains that, according to the betrothal figure of the Spanish civil code, the bullfighter was obliged to cover at least half of these expenses, although apparently, he has chosen to assume the full cost.
