In mid-July, one of the most high-profile divorces of the summer was made public: the singer Ariana Grande (30) separated from her husband Dalton Gomez (28), a real estate agent with whom she married in 2021. Days later it was learned that they had broken up at the beginning of the year, and that the artist was dating Ethan Slater, a co-star in the musical Wicked, who was still married at the time.
Ariana Grande is one of the most influential international artists in the music industry. Since the actors and scriptwriters' strike began in May 2023, her private life has not stopped being in the public eye, despite her imperative desire to carry out a discreet separation. Grande and Gomez formally filed for divorce in mid-September. The agreement dictates that both will regain their single status on March 19, 2024. Laura Wasser, the lawyer who has represented Ariana Grande and other media clients such as Johnny Depp or Kevin Costner, and Dalton Gomez's lawyer, have reached the agreement in less than a month, and the former couple has sealed their marriage amicably, according to The Blast.
The most important point of the agreement for the artist has been privacy. Ariana Grande, who has 380 million followers on Instagram, has become the passive subject of the agreement, so Dalton Gomez is prohibited from giving details of her relationship. The real estate agent may not “grant interviews, write, appear in connections, help or cooperate in the preparation of presentations and books, articles, interviews, programs or other productions or publications of any kind that have to do with the third party.” The singer wants to avoid at all costs the production of documentaries, miniseries or autobiographical films to explain her separation.
The lawyers have also negotiated the monetary issue. Dalton Gomez will receive a single payment of $1,250,000 (approximately €1,180,000) from Ariana Grande, and will not be able to claim financial support or a subsequent pension. The brief states that “the permanent waiver of spousal support is not modifiable, regardless of changes in the health or financial circumstances of either party.”
In addition, Gomez has the right to use, free of charge, the home that the couple had shared in Los Angeles (California), although she cannot rent it to third parties. After this period, the ex-couple's objective is to pay off the remaining mortgage, valued at close to six million dollars, by selling the property. As it is a common property, the proceeds will be shared 50/50.
Ariana Grande will keep all her belongings: “cars, clothes, jewelry, various personal items, her Nara painting, her earnings and what she accumulated at any time, including before, during and after marriage.” Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara, known for his paintings of her with devilish expressions and provocative postures, made a special portrait for the singer.
