Rafael Amargo is about to finish a Master's Degree in Drug Addiction after his problems with the law

The last time we saw Rafael Amargo was in June, after passing through the courtroom where he was going to be tried for an alleged drug trafficking crime. The Prosecutor's Office requested nine years in prison for the dancer in a trial that was finally suspended. Three nightmare years, in which she almost ruined his professional career.

Months have passed and the flamenco dancer has two projects with which he has regained his enthusiasm. This Friday he premieres a new show in Malaga and, in addition, he is about to finish a Master's Degree in Drug Addiction.

At the moment, the dancer cannot travel outside our borders and has lost some professional opportunities, but as reported by the newspaper El Español, the Granada native is excited about the opportunities that he has managed to obtain in Spain, despite the circumstances. .

On Friday, October 20, he presents Chiaroscuro. The head of Juan Amargo in the Carmen Thyssen Museum, in Malaga. A new show inspired by the work of Caravaggio, with a dark and dramatic touch that will not leave anyone indifferent. Now, it is not the only project he has in hand, as he has more things to do "with which everyone is going to be more than surprised."

As the Granada dancer explains, it is a "suggestive and direct" show in which a parallel is established between the story of Juan Bautista and the last episodes that he has had to live with justice in his personal life. "I've done theater, film and television, and now I'm going to museums," he confirms with a laugh.

Amargo's work is inspired by that of the greatest exponent of Baroque painting with this proposal of flamenco dance that "moves away from the purely aestheticist to present a less idealized flamenco, a little rickety" and "that plays on the balance between the animal –or fierce– and the human".

Furthermore, the dancer surprises by confessing that after no less than three years, he is about to finish a Master's Degree in Mental Health and Drug Addiction, which he studied at the University of Barcelona. A program focused on training on drug consumption and dependence, later delving into other areas of interest.

It will be in November when Rafael Amargo will defend his thesis before the court to obtain his approved degree, something he plans to do by adding testimonies and interviews with well-known faces with one goal: publishing his first book. A third project that, as the aforementioned newspaper has managed to guess, will be related to the use of drugs in art.

As if that were not enough, 2024 seems to be the year of Amargo. The man from Granada is preparing the celebrations for the 30th anniversary of the Rafael Amargo Company. A show titled 30 Anées. Le Parade Chateaux and which will debut at the Teatro Real in Madrid.
