How to remove rust stains from clothes

There are particularly resistant stains on clothing that we cannot remove simply by putting the garment in the washing machine. Blood, dirt or grass stains and grease stains are some of those that force us to rub vigorously and use popular remedies to eradicate them.

And in this spectrum of stains on clothes that cause us a headache, there are also rust stains, which do not go away with a standard program in the washing machine. A garment can have a rust stain for different reasons. The most common is that the clothesline is rusty and this spoils our garment.

Less common, although also possible, is that the drum of your washing machine has rusty areas. Or that you have rubbed some rusty surface with your clothes. Whatever the case, here we reveal the homemade trick with which to get rid of rust stains on clothes and make your clothes look like new.

Bego is an expert in home organization and cleaning who, under the pseudonym @la_ordenatriz, has more than 1.2 million followers on the social network Instagram, where she shares many tips for removing difficult stains. Among them, she also rust stains on clothes.

This remedy is, in addition to being simple and effective, very cheap and ecological, since you will not need to resort to chemical products, but a couple of ingredients that we all have in the kitchen will be enough: lemon and table salt. And yes, it is also suitable for colored clothing or delicate garments.

First, sprinkle some fine salt on the stain. The amount of salt will depend on the size of the stain itself, which should be completely covered by a generous layer of salt. Next, squeeze half a lemon – or a whole one if the stain is very large – over the salt. Then, repeat the application of more salt on top of the lemon.

Then, put the garment in the sun without rinsing or rubbing, with the freshly applied lemon and salt. Leave it in the sun for two or three hours. After this time, put the garment in the washing machine with the rest of the laundry and program the corresponding wash based on it (cotton, delicate garments, towels...).

When the wash is finished, you will see that the stain has completely disappeared. Of course, be careful when hanging it, don't go to ruin it again with the rusty clothesline.
