Another classic says goodbye: 'Blue Bloods' announces its end after 13 years on the air

Blue Bloods: Police Family could not return in September as was tradition for the first time in its history due to the writers' strike and the actors' strike. The public can rest assured: it had been renewed and will return when the new episodes are produced. Of course, the public must get used to the idea that it will not be on television forever: season 14, the one pending broadcast, will be the last.

The decision was announced this week when the police series' return date was announced on American programming. The CBS channel will resume the Reagan family cases on February 16 with the broadcast of the first part of the season, which consists of ten episodes. The network reserves the remaining eight episodes that make up the second half of the season for fall 2024.

Blue Bloods began patrolling American television in September 2010. It offered a hybrid between police and family drama by focusing on the Reagans, a family in which the work tradition was to forge a career in the police force. Tom Selleck, the patriarch, was law enforcement commissioner and the sons had jobs involving Donnie Wahlberg as a detective, Bridget Moynahan as a district attorney, and Will as an officer (and later sergeant).

At first, the series did not have excessive numbers to survive on television. CBS had assigned it to Fridays, a difficult night due to the obstacles to obtaining loyalty from the public and the age of the audience. But, with more than 12 million viewers on a television that was already showing the erosion of the audience of general channels, it gained one renewal after another, even having a high average age and unattractive for advertisers.

In fact, Blue bloods, which in Spain is broadcast on the Energy and Fox channels, is still doing well in the United States. The thirteenth season, broadcast between September 2022 and May 2023, still gathered around 6 million viewers in its run on CBS linear programming. When he says goodbye permanently, he will have broadcast a total of 293 episodes.

“Over the past 13 years, it has been an honor and a privilege to work on a series that not only celebrates the men and women who protect and serve New York City, but has also shown the importance of family,” Tom explained. Selleck in a statement, where he highlighted that it had been fortunate to have worked with “these incredible actors, screenwriters, producers, directors and crew.”

It is the second veteran production to announce its end this November after Hollywood has reactivated activity. Also broadcast on the CBS channel, Young Sheldon, the prequel to The Big Bang Theory centered on the character of Sheldon Cooper, will say goodbye after the seventh season pending broadcast.
