Wines with an aftertaste of wildlife salvation

During the years she lived in Australia, Carla Marsà discovered a winery that collaborated with African people to provide them with drinking water. As a biologist concerned about the conservation of endangered species, the case of this winery gave Marsà the idea of combining her love for wine with her role as a volunteer in the Cabo Verde Natura 2000 NGO, specialized in turtle conservation. loggerhead (Caretta caretta).

While he was shaping his business project, Marsà met Lavin Manwani, a born entrepreneur. Together they founded Karetta Maluca in August 2022, a young wine brand that allocates half a euro for each bottle sold to conservation projects for endangered species. They market five different types of wine from a cooperative in Alicante. “They are vegan and organically farmed wines because we are clear that the product we sell must be consistent with what we defend,” says the co-founder.

Until this month of September, all the money raised went to the Cape Verde Natura 2000 NGO, but now the brand has started collaborations with four more conservation entities. That is, each of their five wines raises money for a different cause. Karetta Maluca wines can be found in restaurants and stores in Catalonia, but also in Madrid and Asturias. Through these establishments, the Barcelona firm expects to invoice close to 50,000 euros this year, which will be its first full fiscal year.

In case you were wondering, the curious name of the brand has its origin in the scientific name of the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) and in the word maluca, which Marsà had heard so many times during her stay with the NGO in Cape Verde and which It means 'crazy'.

With the Crianza red, the buyer fights against poaching and other threats that endanger the wild tiger in India. On the other hand, with the young red the client collaborates with a shelter and rehabilitation center for birds in decline. The pink one supports the rescue and protection of koalas in Australia and the semi-sweet white one focuses on the research and conservation of the Franciscan or Silver dolphin. Finally, the dry white is the one that continues Karetta Maluca's original mission: saving the Cape Verde loggerhead sea turtle.
