What is AdBlue and how should you refill its tank without risk?

At gas stations we can refuel gasoline, diesel, diesel plus... And since 2015 a new pump has appeared: the AdBlue pump. This solution has its origin in the Euro6 emission regulations of the European Union, which aims to reduce polluting gases associated with combustion vehicles. The regulations establish a new emission limit of 80 mg/km of nitrogen oxides (NOx) for passenger cars with diesel engines.

AdBlue is a liquid suitable for diesel vehicles with a selective catalytic reduction or SCR system. This nitrogenous solution made from the organic matter contained in the urea of terrestrial vertebrates is capable of eliminating the harmful gases ejected by these engines. Adblue converts toxic nitrogen oxide (NOx) into nitrogen and water vapor and is stored in a separate tank to avoid contact with fuel.

The dealer or individual from whom you buy your vehicle must inform you of its compatibility with AdBlue technology. Vehicles are generally reserved for a tank with a blue screw cap next to the fuel tank. On some models the specific tank is in the trunk or next to the engine. If you have any doubts about the location and maximum capacity of the tank, you should consult the vehicle manual.

Recharging the AdBlue tank is one of the services that you can request from your trusted workshop during periodic inspections of your vehicle. You can also do it yourself at home, if you buy a carafe or fill up directly from the pump at a service station.

Under no circumstances should AdBlue be poured out of its specific tank or mixed with the engine fuel. In addition, this liquid is quite corrosive, so you should avoid direct contact with the skin and eyes at all costs. AdBlue can also damage the vehicle's bodywork and plastics.

This liquid is sensitive to sudden changes in temperature. In summer it must be kept below 30 degrees and avoid direct exposure to the sun and during winter it will freeze from 11 degrees below zero. Keep in mind that AdBlue has an expiration period of one year, so if you opt for repairs in the workshop, you must scrupulously comply with this period.
