The agreement with Endesa allows Consum to reduce its electricity bill by up to 40 million

In the 2023 results of the Valencian cooperative Consum, energy costs have had a significant impact, and this time positively. Its general director, Antonio Rodríguez Lázaro, explained that this year “there has been a very important reduction in our electricity consumption rate”, and all thanks to the agreement with Endesa that the company announced a little less than a year ago.

A supply contract that came into force on January 1, 2023 and consists of a 75 MW PPA block with a solar profile whose objective was to cover approximately 50% of Consum's electricity demand, the equivalent of the consumption of almost 76,000 families. The solar energy comes from the portfolio of solar installations of Enel Green Power Spain, the renewable subsidiary of Endesa.

This new agreement has allowed the company to reduce its electricity bill by around 40 million euros, as explained by its main executive at the press conference to present its 2023 results.

It is one of the reasons that has allowed the company to adjust margins, as well as the savings from the use of its other photovoltaic installations, since 97.7% of the cooperative's energy comes from renewable sources and the cooperative is betting on install more and more photovoltaic solar panels. They are already present in 27 supermarkets and in two of their logistics platforms.

As part of its decarbonization strategy, Rodríguez explained that during this year it is planned to double the network of electric vehicle chargers in supermarkets. Likewise, this year it has incorporated five new 100% electric trucks for the delivery of food to its stores in the Benidorm area, and it already has seven in total. With these additions, the Valencian cooperative affirms that 92% of its transport fleet is eco-efficient.
