Do not return a receipt of your account so quickly: the two problems that you can suffer

Direct debit of receipts has removed a concern from consumers, who no longer have to travel to pay for services as before. It becomes one more payment in the bank account as long as a prior and express authorization has been signed so that the entity can make the charges.

It is the so-called domiciliation order. As of a certain date, permission is given to start some payments. It can be something punctual or permanent, on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis. Like paying phone bills, electricity, subscriptions to a series platform or paying for the gym.

And if you want to return the receipt when the direct debit is still in force? The refund can be made within a period of eight weeks if the charge was previously authorized, when giving the go-ahead the amount to be deducted was not known and it is very different from previous payments, such as an invoice triggered by a bad meter reading ; or thirteen months if it was not authorized, it is specified in the Banco de España Bank Customer Portal. "If you didn't authorize the receipt charge, you can just reject it."

But when returning a receipt, it must be taken into account that "it has its consequences". The entity can ask the reason for the return to avoid problems later. Here it is important that the bank correctly collects the cause, because two problems can arise.

A first problem that can arise is that the supply company believes that the service is cancelled. It occurs when an attempt is made to collect a receipt by mistake or because urgent liquidity is needed at that moment. "If we do not make the cause explicit, we run the risk that the supply company believes that we are canceling the service," specifies the Bank of Spain. It is also advisable to contact the company to avoid service cuts.

The second problem that may arise is when dealing with the public administration, according to the Bank of Spain. When returning receipts issued by the Social Security or the Tax Agency, for example, the action "can generate surcharges and loss of subsidies or bonuses not only for the returned receipt, but for the following ones that were stopped issuing," it is warned.

What solution is there to avoid problems? The bank has to correctly specify the specific return key so that later there are no setbacks. "When you give instructions to the entity, rejecting receipts or other payment orders, it must use all means to comply with it," it is added.

The bank has 10 business days to return the full amount or justify the rejection of the request. If you deny it, you must indicate which claim procedures, judicial and extrajudicial, are available.
