Barcelona receives 62 million European funds to invest in sustainable mobility

The metropolis of Barcelona will receive another 62 million euros from the second call for Next Generation European funds to carry out actions that promote sustainable mobility and help reduce environmental pollution.

This second call for aid, which was resolved during the summer by the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (MITMA) and which had a maximum amount of 500 million for all of Spain, as reported by the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) in a release.

In addition, it has been carried out within the framework of the Government's Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, financed by the European Union-Next Generation EU and, specifically, exclusively for projects owned by municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants.

This subsidy will make it possible to make 44 new actions a reality, of which 17 correspond to mobility projects prepared by the AMB.

Specifically, of the 62 million euros that MITMA has granted, 29.4 million euros (47% of the total) will be used to finance projects and services of the metropolitan body.

There are also 19 performances that have been placed on the waiting list due to exhaustion of credit, by exceeding the maximum amount provided for in the call.

Specifically, this money will be used to buy 59 electric hydrogen buses for the directly managed Metropolitan Bus (TMB) fleet, speed up the implementation of local low emission zones, or complete the Bicivia -the metropolitan pedal network-.

The amount will also allow the continuation of urbanization and accessibility projects at the metropolitan bus stops and the construction of six large, high-capacity stations for bicycles and scooters, managed by the Bicibox service: one in Viladecans, three in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat and two in El Prat de Llobregat.
