The entire body of a girl who went missing for 10 days after she disappeared when her car was trapped away in a mudslide was found under 15 feet of sand, stone and logs.
"From the days after the landslide, searchers discovered a place in the debris stream in which they thought Moore's automobile probably came to sleep.
Police say the surgery to locate Moore, who had been a 50-year-old registered nurse in Warrendale, Oregon, was unbelievably treacherous and they needed to use heavy machinery -- such as front loaders and dump trucks to eliminate debris simply to get to the place where they believed Moore would be.
Multnomah police said the job needed to be performed quite delicately since the sand in the region was moist and unstable.
When the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office attained the approximate place in which they believed Moore might be, they started working with a private builder who had used a high powered metal sensor to find the specific location of the vehicle under the 15 feet of sand, logs and rocks.
Multnomah County Sheriff's Office were subsequently able to finish the restoration with the aid of firefighters from neighboring Corbett County.
"It is not the outcome everybody could have hoped ," River Patrol Unit Sgt. Steve Dangler stated,"but at this stage it brings closure to the family members and enables them to start the grieving procedure."
