X launches audio and video calls after months of waiting

Elon Musk has fulfilled one of his most important bets by taking control of Twitter (now X) and the platform has finally inaugurated its own audio and video calling system after months of waiting and much expectation to see how they work.

Several users of the platform have received a notification when opening the X application alerting them of the update: “Audio and video calls are here!” says the message, briefly explaining how they work and their functions.

One of the options for these calls is to allow them only for your contacts, with people you follow or with verified users, thus being able to restrict who you want to talk to at any given time.

There's also a new "Turn on audio and video calling" button within the app's settings, which says you can "turn on the feature and then select who you're comfortable using it with."

To call a user you have to open a direct message as if you were going to write to them and then select the phone icon in the upper right corner of the screen and choose audio or video call.

Neither Musk nor X have officially announced the launch of the calls, so it is still unclear to what extent the platform will allow all users, including non-Premium users, to use them for free.
