Why are these flamingos white?

In the natural spaces of the Llobregat Delta we can find dozens of species of birds, but the flamingos are the ones that attract the eyes of all visitors, as in this case in La Vanguardia's Readers' Photos.

The question I have asked myself when portraying them is... why are these flamingos white? Well, because the coloration of these birds depends largely on their diet.

Flamingos feed on small aquatic organisms and insects. Small crustaceans, mollusks, worms, algae and other organic matter such as protozoa.

If there are a large number of mollusks and crustaceans in its habitat, its plumage will be pinker and even reddish. On the contrary, if its diet is based more on algae, insects and small worms, its color will be more whitish.

The color of the flamingos of the Llobregat Delta therefore gives us information about the type of food that these animals find in their waters.
