Watch over the social elevator

Jordi Basté scolded us last Monday in his column in La Vanguardia for the very negative content of the news that we send to our readers. It is true that the current moment does not invite much optimism due to the threat of a serious global conflict that has been brewing since Russia decided to invade Ukraine and has now put the world on edge due to the tension in Gaza. Our job is not easy and we have to find a complex balance between explaining what is going well and the things that are not working. In fact, it is good for the journalist to have a critical and denunciatory feeling, but it is also true that he should not be abused. And I will not tire of remembering that now that we can measure the audience of all news, the idea that good news does not sell and that only the negative aspects triumph among readers is false.

Well, without ceasing to look askance at what is happening around Israel, today it is possible to take advantage of this space to praise a modest entity in the Raval that has been carrying out extraordinary work for 25 years to help more people integrate into the country. of 1,600 children from 30 different countries. Braval's work is very simple, but at the same time very complex. It is about recruiting neighborhood children with adaptation problems or risks and, in exchange for their interest in playing sports –basically basketball and indoor soccer–, motivating them to study and not abandon their studies. The work has borne fruit and, as was said yesterday at the entity's celebration event, it would be difficult to know what the future of those boys would be without the existence of Braval. Many of those children are today men well integrated into our society, and a significant number of them have closed the circle by working as volunteers at the center to care for the new generations.

The well-worn social elevator does not work automatically. It must be taken care of by the Administration, but the role of civil society is still fundamental. If we turn our backs on all these sectors and don't worry about them, the problems that will be generated will rebound on us later like a boomerang. Thanks, Braval.
