The former singer and current leader of the Ugandan opposition Robert Kyagulanyi, better known as Bobi Wine, was arrested this Thursday by the Ugandan police, as confirmed by the National Unity Platform (NUP), the party he presides.

Mathias Mpuug, leader of the NUP in parliament, has denounced on his X account (formerly Twitter) how Wine, who had just returned from abroad, has been arrested by the "cowardly regime" at Entebbe airport.

For his part, Wine himself has also used the same platform to communicate that he is "under de facto house arrest" and that his house continues to be surrounded by the Police and the Army, preventing access to his followers to the point of using gas. tear gas and live ammunition to disperse them.

According to local media, the group organized a march to protest this government action, which the spokesperson for the city's Metropolitan Police, Patrick Onyango, declared illegal. "Security agencies will ensure that no one takes part in the illegal procession and anyone who is detained will be brought to court," he says.

NUP deputy spokesperson Waiswa Mufumbiro said: "Welcoming our president is a people's initiative and as party leaders we fully support the preparations because they are completely legal."

Uganda currently has Yoweri Museveni as president, who was re-elected in January 2021 after an electoral process marked by the disappearance of hundreds of opposition supporters, protests dispersed with live ammunition by security forces and at least 54 protesters killed.

Due to these events, in February 2022, the European Union (EU) delegation in Uganda expressed concern about reports of torture and other human rights abuses.
