Three slightly injured by smoke poisoning in a fire at the Meliá Castilla hotel in Madrid

At least three workers at the Meliá Castilla hotel have been slightly injured by smoke poisoning after a fire broke out in their restaurant, according to a spokesperson for Madrid Emergencies.

The fire originated in the hotel kitchen, which is located on Calle Poeta Joan Maragall, in the Plaza de Cuzco, and has affected part of the false ceiling of the facility itself. The smoke has spread to the upper floors.

Two kitchen employees and a hotel security guard were injured in the fire, who were treated by SAMUR-Civil Protection. Several guests have initially had to be evicted, but have been able to return to their rooms.

Ten Fire Departments have been transferred to the scene of the event, which have located the focus and have extinguished the flames quickly. Subsequently they have carried out a control of the plants affected by the spread of smoke.

The workplace accident rate group of the Madrid Police Judicial Coordination Station is investigating the origin of the fire.
