this is journalism

There is no better school of journalism than the Events section. All young journalists should spend some time embedded in this area where the basic rules of the trade are quickly learned. This requires a mixture of many things: effort (there is no truce or rest), impudence (you have to obtain information in very harsh conditions), empathy (earning the trust of police, judges and people of bad living) and sensitivity (not everything can be published). Today, La Vanguardia brings together great journalists who more than meet all these demands: Mayka Navarro, Toni Muñoz, Javier Ricou, Domingo Marchena, Enrique Figueredo and Ignacio Orovio. But today I would like to talk to you about a phenomenon: Carles Porta, from Lleida.

He started in the newspaper Segre in the Politics section, from where he went to the TV3 delegation in Lleida. He later lived his first steps as a special envoy in conflicts such as those in Kosovo, Bosnia or Rwanda, until one day he was attracted by the strange crimes that occurred in a district in a remote town in the Pyrenees. Eight years of his life dedicated to the mountain of Tor left an indelible mark on him. He later repeated the experience with another crime in the mountains, in Fago, and ended up developing his own production company.

Restless by definition, he started making podcasts when this audiovisual phenomenon was in its infancy. Of course, always related to the world of crime. The success led him to export the idea to TV3 with Crims and so on until now. What is absolutely unheard of is that what he has achieved now: clarify with his tenacity and professionalism an event that occurred 32 years ago in Portbou. Don't miss her story today in the Living section.

Porta has other stories in his portfolio. Some, which he has explained to his friends, could be reasons for Pulitzer Prizes if he were an Anglo-Saxon journalist, but this is not the case. Porta is an honest, hard-working man who is in love with his profession. Dad... what is journalism? Journalism is this, my son, a guy like Carles Porta.
