They detect for the first time a wolf in the Serralada de Marina in Santa Coloma de Gramenet

Workers of the natural park of the Serralada de Marina have detected a wolf in the municipality of Santa Coloma de Gramanet (Barcelonès North). As confirmed by sources from the Rural Agents. It is the first time that an animal of this species appears so close to Barcelona.

The Rural Agents have made it clear that the specimen is not "settled" in the area and that it has only been seen once. They have detailed that he was identified in March 2022 through a photo-trapping camera. Currently in Catalonia there are four identified wolves. One in Alt Empordà, the other in Alta Ribagorça, a third in Solsonès, and the last in Moianès. It is not ruled out that the latter is the same one that has been seen in the metropolitan area.

The Rural Agents have explained that the existence of this wolf has not been officially reported because it has only been seen once and it has not been possible to carry out DNA checks to clarify whether it is one of the other four specimens detected in any part of the territory or a new one.

In this sense, they highlighted that these animals "are used to traveling long distances", so it is likely that the specimen detected in Moianès could have traveled to Barcelonès or Vallès or even went to Bages or Osona.

"They have not seen him again through the cameras nor have any footprints been located or interactions with herds reported," commented sources from the Rural Agents who assured that when this type of evidence is detected, follow-up work is done with help of the canine unit and in coordination with the Climate Action department. So far, all the wolves identified in Catalonia are males.
