“There are more and more renunciations of inheritance to avoid fights with siblings”

Leaving money and assets to our loved ones is in many cases the last act of love and one of the most common ways to increase personal wealth. Despite this, the economic legacy is often a source of conflicts and problems, which is why 16% of heirs decide to resign. The debts of the deceased and the lack of liquidity to pay the taxes inherent to this right are the most frequent causes, but it is also waived "for moral reasons."

"I find more and more people who say they want to resign because they don't want to fight with their brother," comments inheritance lawyer Alejandro Ebrat Picart on the "Bolsillo" podcast. A casuistry that clashes with the fact that the majority of families end up arguing about the inheritance: “80% of them end up angry,” he asserts. In addition to family troubles, the lawyer explains how to save money when inheriting and illustrates the comparative disadvantage in paying inheritance tax depending on the place of residence, which leading some taxpayers to decide to move to another community.
