The University of Girona (UdG) will offer an official degree in fashion next year, the first in Catalonia. The degree will offer students a comprehensive training in the world of fashion and will prepare them for pattern making, tailoring, design, research and innovation in this field.
They explain from the UdG that this degree responds to "the need and difficulty of companies in the sector in incorporating transversal and specialized fashion professionals". The presentation ceremony of this degree was attended by designers and representatives of some of the companies in the textile sector linked to the demarcation such as Toni Pons, Louis Vuitton, Red Point, Celia Vela, Esther Noriega, Cantamañanas, Esther Noriega, Claudio di Rossi, Carina Roca , Emma Bover and Wyne Kirabo.
The fashion sector, which represents 2.7% of GDP, is one of the sectors with the greatest professional projection. The rector of the UdG, Quim Salvi, pointed out that this degree, which was approved last June after five years of work, is "unique in Catalonia". "It is a serious, important and attractive bet for companies in the sector to give outlet to the talent that exists in the territory and energize it", he explained.
The degree will last four years and total 240 credits and classes will be taught in two locations. The theoretical subjects will take place at the headquarters of the Escola Universitària de les Arts Eram, which is located in the old Coma Cros de Salt textile factory; while practical subjects will be taught at the Qstura headquarters, located in the UdG Science and Technology Park.
The director of Qstura and coordinator of the degree, Sílvia Castelló, highlights the differentiating features of studies "with environmental awareness and respectful of tradition". For her part, the Councilor for Economic Promotion of the Girona City Council, Gemma Geis, recalled that the presence of the arts is frequent in European universities with a long tradition and has promised to promote industrial doctorate programs to give continuity to innovation in the textile sector.
The mayor of Salt, Jordi Viñas, stresses that this degree's commitment to fashion "closes the circle that inherits the city's textile legacy, shunning a parochial perspective and with a desire for international projection."
